Why do people travel?
When you think about it, traveling isn’t always easy. To find cheap plane tickets means you need to book your flight months before your actual trip. You also have to have money, plan an itinerary, and so on.
And yet, many still consider travel as an essential human activity. That’s because, despite some problems some of us may encounter while traveling, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. These include making memories, having fun, improving health, etc.
That being said, if you haven’t traveled in a while, you need a refresher on the best travel tips to follow. Here are five of them.
1. Keep an Open Mind
Of all the travel advice you’ll come across, the most important one to remember is to keep an open mind.
Remember, you’re a visitor. It’s not your place to judge other customs or demand that everything be the same as it is at home. Traveling is about new experiences, and that means allowing yourself to be exposed to all that another country has to offer.
2. Always Buy Travel Insurance
There are many travel tricks you can try. Some of them, such as bringing a sarong, packing lotion in your carry-on, and so on are good to try, but if you forget about them your trip wouldn’t be ruined.
Buying travel insurance, however, is non-negotiable. If you have a medical emergency while abroad, you wouldn’t want to wipe out your savings.
3. Follow All Travel Tips for Staying Safe
Again, there are many travel tips and tricks that seasoned travelers can give you—knowing how to protect yourself while traveling isn’t one of them.
This is because staying safe while in another country isn’t a trick; it’s a priority. Aside from purchasing travel insurance, consider alerting your bank or credit card company about your travel plans. You should also leave copies of your passport and other important documents to a relative or friend back at home (just in case you run into trouble while abroad).
If you’re worried about losing your luggage or hauling it around, consider something like Radical Storage. It will be one less thing for you to worry about.
4. Plan for Ways to Access Your Funds
Bringing a credit card isn’t enough. Make sure you also have your debit cards with you, traveler’s cheques, and prepaid cards.
Don’t forget, there are places where ATMs are hard to find. Sometimes, they may also be out of service. In case you need money, or if your card gets lost, you have other sources as a backup.
5. Bring a First Aid Kit
And don’t hesitate to fill it with your meds, especially if they’re prescription.
If you run out of medicine while traveling, local pharmacies might not carry them. It’s better to overstock these items, instead of just bringing enough for your trip.
